Fire destroys Phoenix home and kills 6 pets, couple claims animal control won't help

PHOENIX - The City of Phoenix wants to help an elderly couple who lost their pets in a house fire.

The fire started just after 9:15 a.m. Thursday near 24th Street and Southern Avenue.

Fire officials say the couple was in court when their home caught on fire.

The couples’ five dogs and a cat died.

The couple claimed Animal Control told them to drag their pets to the street The couple says they can’t do that because they’re elderly.

Melissa Gable with Animal Control says the couple was told to call the city of Phoenix’s Public Works Department.

A spokeswoman with Public Works says they would be happy to help.
