PHOENIX - Phoenix firefighters and a hazardous materials crew are working to cool an overheated tank that almost caused an explosion at a water treatment plant near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
The incident happened Tuesday evening at Summit Chemical Specialty near 29th and Washington streets.
Phoenix Fire Department officials said a bad chemical reaction blew a lid off a tank at the facility which caused a flash fire.
Phoenix Fire Capt. Ruben Saavedra said the tank contained a solution of water and hydrochloric acid. It didn't contain enough water, which caused a chemical reaction that made the tank overheat.
Saavedra says the plant was evacuated. Crews are spraying the outside of the tank with water to cool it down.
He says cooling could last throughout the night.
