PHOENIX - A 19-year-old man has been arrested after his 3-month-old son drowned in the bathtub of a Phoenix home, according to authorities.
Phoenix police Sgt. Trent Crump said officers were called to the residence near 27th Avenue and Van Buren on Tuesday morning and found water actively flowing out of the home.
According to police, Carlos Castillo placed 3-month-old Phoenix, along with his 1- and 3-year-old brothers, in the tub with the water running. Castillo then reportedly fell asleep.
The children's 19-year-old mother and great-grandmother were also in the home, but were asleep as well, Crump said.
Authorities found the baby submerged in the bathtub and rushed him to the hospital in extremely critical condition, where he later died. Police said the other two boys in the tub were not injured.
Crump said Castillo is facing second degree murder and child abuse charges.
Family members tell ABC15 that the children's mother works the overnight shift at a Circle K and then comes homes and goes to sleep.
"I think it was an accident. I can't say anything bad [about] either of them," said Veronica Ramirez, the victim's aunt.
A spokesperson for CPS said the agency has not had any previous incidents at the family's home.
