PHOENIX - Authorities say a fire at a Phoenix apartment complex affected 12 units early Sunday morning.
According to a Phoenix fire spokesperson, the flames broke out around 2 a.m. at the Willow Springs Apartments near Indian School Road, just west of Interstate 17.
Fire officials said 12 units were affected by the smoke and flames.
"What woke me up were the fire alarms," said tenant Michael Williams. "I came out and the building was ablaze."
Four children were transported to a hospital for minor smoke inhalation, and two adults were treated at the scene for minor scratches, fire crews said.
"It could have been tragic," said Captain Scott McDonald with the Phoenix Fire Department. "This was a positive outcome."
Red Cross, apartment staff, and other helpers assisted the affected residents in getting them another place to stay.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
