Dump the Pump Day: Arizonans urged to use public transportation

PHOENIX - Valley Metro is urging you to "Dump the Pump" today as part of a national campaign to promote use of public transit.
 
It is an annual event that started in 2006 when gas prices reached over $3 per gallon.
 
The Arizona Transit Association reported record setting transit boardings in Arizona in 2013 at 102,000,000.   Representatives said that the average family can save over $10,000 per year if they could ditch one of their cars.
 
This comes as gas prices are steadily on the rise.  
 
The national average for unleaded gas is at $3.67 per gallon.  In Arizona that average is $3.48 per gallon.

Tensions in Iraq are blamed for increases that will likely continue over the next several months.
 
Some analysts predict the price for a barrel of crude oil may increase by $15 or $20.
