PHOENIX - A popular former teacher and coach at Camelback High School is accused of pleasuring himself in front of a school bus.
Jay Mitchell Edelson, 59, is charged with three counts of public sexual indecency.
Edelson, driving southbound on I-17 near the 101, pulled up next to an Agua Fria school bus, and looked inside the bus while pleasuring himself, according to Department of Public Safety court documents.
No students were onboard the bus.
Instead, three bus drivers were riding as part of training.
One of the drivers put her hand out of a bus window and wagged her index finger at Edelson, according to DPS documents.
The documents state they took down Edelson’s car’s license plate, which helped authorities track him down.
Edelson was charged Tuesday; the alleged incident occurred in March.
He worked for the Phoenix Union High School District for 27 years, a district spokesperson said.
Edelson retired in May of 2013 from Camelback, the spokesperson said.
Edelson coached the boys’ cross country team last fall; the spokesperson could not comment on whether Edelson would coach next year.
A member of the team told ABC15 that Edelson retired from coaching after last season.
No one answered the door at Edelson’s Phoenix home. A message left at his listed number was not returned.
