PHOENIX - A stretch of Interstate 17 in north Phoenix is back open Monday night after a pickup plowed into a semi truck, leaving a 13-year-old dead.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said the accident happened around 2:45 p.m. on southbound I-17 at Jomax Road.
DPS officials said a man and his two sons were driving from Rock Springs to their Gilbert home when their pickup drifted into the shoulder near Jomax Road.
The pickup struck the semi, which was pulled over along the highway because of a flat tire.
After the pickup hit the big rig, authorities say a tow truck driving south on the I-17 hit the truck.
The 13-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene. The father and the teen's 11-year-old brother were critically injured.
Officials say all southbound lanes of the I-17 were closed for hours after the incident.
Authorities are still investigating what caused the crash.
