PHOENIX - Two men are in custody after the driver of a stolen car rammed a Department of Public Safety vehicle while trying to flee, authorities said.
DPS public information Officer Raul Garcia said that around 1:30 p.m. on Friday a Vehicle Theft Task Force detective checked a license plate on a Honda Accord while on Interstate 17 near Camelback Road and learned the vehicle had been reported stolen.
Detectives in unmarked vehicles followed the Honda and ended up boxing it in at a Circle K parking lot near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street.
The suspect put the car in reverse, hitting one of the DPS vehicles, according to Garcia. The suspect car then spun out and hit a concrete pole.
The suspect vehicle kept going and went the wrong way into traffic, hitting another DPS vehicle which disabled the car.
The suspects jumped out and ran away on foot.
They were caught a short distance away, the passenger caught by Phoenix police and the driver arrested by DPS.
Garcia said both suspects are males in their 20s.
One detective suffered a minor injury, Garcia said. The incident ended about 20 minutes after the suspects were first spotted.
