PHOENIX - Two people are dead and four others were injured after a crash on the Loop 202 near 44th Street Sunday night.
Department of Public Safety officials said the accident happened around 8:30 p.m.
DPS spokesman Bart Graves said a tire went flat on a Ford SUV traveling westbound on the Loop 202 and the 19-year-old driver pulled over into the HOV lane and got out to direct traffic.
That's when a Toyota pickup truck driven by a 30-year-old Litchfield Park man rear-ended the SUV sending it rolling over and landing on its roof.
Graves said 42-year-old Josefina Holguin-Urquiza and 19-year-old Silvia Mistica Rivera Holguin, passengers in the SUV, died at the scene.
Also injured in the SUV were a 15-month-old, 14-year-old, and 12-year-old. Graves said the toddler has life-threatening injuries while the teens have serious injuries.
The 19-year-old driver of the SUV was not injured. The driver of the pickup truck was treated and released from a Phoenix hospital, Graves said.
The freeway was shut down for several hours for the investigation.
Earlier, DPS had reported that three people were dead following the crash.
