PHOENIX - The parents of a 2-year-old boy who died earlier this week have been arrested on murder and child abuse charges.
Phoenix police say that around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, officers and Phoenix firefighters responded to a call of a child not breathing at a residence near 83rd Avenue and McDowell Road.
First-responders found the child, Blake Alvarez, unresponsive.
He was taken to an area hospital where his death was later pronounced, police said.
Police say medical personnel noticed injuries on the child which appeared suspicious and homicide detectives responded to investigate the toddler's death.
The boy's father, Darnell Alvarez, admitted to hitting Blake with a belt several times throughout the day for wetting himself and defecating in his underwear.
The boy's mother, Davianna Blake, admitted to being aware of some of the abuse and failing to call for help when the boy showed signs of distress.
The victim's parents were booked into jail for child abuse and first-degree murder.
