PHOENIX - When Jene Wood went looking for a new car, she had something very special in mind.
Not a special color, or brand, or even a type of vehicle. What Wood said she really wanted was a license plate.
So she basically bought her new car just because of what the plates could offer?
"Oh absolutely. Yes," said Wood.
The license plates Wood is referencing are special "Clean-Air Blue Skies" alternative fuel plates available only on certain cars and in limited numbers.
Only 1,800 of the plates are currently available. Having one allows drivers to travel in HOV lanes even if no one else is in the car.
"It feels so great even when I'm just merging and there's a little bit of traffic. It really just cuts my drive in half," said Wood.
Arizona Department of Transportation officials said that while the plates are still available, only certain makes and models of cars qualify:
Chevrolet Volt (2011-2014), Fisker Automotive Karma (2012), Ford C-MAX Energi (2013-2014), Ford Fusion Energi (2013-2014), Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid (2014), and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (2012-2014).
ADOT officials said they are offering the clean air plates as a way to encourage drivers who have low-emission vehicles.
