PHOENIX - St. Mary's Episcopal Church was the scene of an early morning first-alarm fire Saturday.
The church, located at 39th and Maryland avenues, caught fire around 1 a.m.
Phoenix Fire Department says the fire started on the exterior of the classroom area, but spread inside. Crews were able to put out the fire before it reached the sanctuary near the classroom.
Phoenix Fire Captain Scott McDonald originally said the fire appears to be suspicious, but officials are now thinking it was accidental. The cause is under investigation.
ABC15 was told the church is a very active scene on Sundays, so members of the church are hoping to figure out what to do about the blaze soon. The priest says they are going to do what they can to make sure services are not interrupted.
Luckily, no one was in the building or injured during the fire.
The church is also affiliated with St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance.
