Catholic community reacts to murder of Phoenix priest

PHOENIX - Thursday morning’s mass at St. Catherine's Church took on a different meaning, as priests and members of the church expressed their sadness following the murder of Father Kenneth Walker , as well as for the attack on Father Joseph Terra.

"The way we're going to get through this is through Jesus Christ," said Father David San Filippo.

And just a few blocks away at St. Mary's Church, members of the congregation knelt and prayed for the priests, honoring the life of Father Walker.

Many of them were shocked that such a thing could happen near a church.

"Even in a sacred place like a church, one never knows what's going to happen," said church member Josephe Gallucci.

Father Vincent Mesi with St. Mary's says the church is in the same diocese as Mother of Mercy, and he even had a chance to meet both priests.

"They were just lovely people. Just wonderful people, very holy men. And it's…well…very, very sad," Father Mesi said.

He hopes the Catholic community will work together to get through this tragic event.
