Benjamin Kuzelka sentenced to 16 years in prison in deadly 2013 wrong-way crash

PHOENIX - A Judge sentenced a Phoenix man to 16 years in prison in a 2013 wrong-way crash along State Route 51 that killed a woman from New York.

Judge Warren Granville sentenced Benjamin Kuzelka, 27, to 16 years in prison and 5 years supervised probation upon release on Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, according to Karen Arra of Superior Court of Arizona.

Kuzelka pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and aggravated assault in Maricopa County Superior Court in June.

During the early morning hours on October 6, 2013, the 27-year-old was driving northbound in the southbound HOV lane on SR 51 between Bell and Greenway roads before crashing head-on into an SUV, according to DPS officials.

The driver of the SUV, Raja Marlmuthu, suffered serious injuries. His passenger, Mary A. Boysmann, was killed. Kuzelka suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital and released.

No other details were released.
