PHOENIX - The Phoenix Zoo has welcomed a baby orangutan!
The young male Bornean orangutan was born Tuesday, Sept. 2 to parents, Bess and Michael. The zoo made the announcement Wednesday.
Zoo officials said the mother and her baby appear to be doing well and were being kept in their night house so they could be monitored by staff.
The zoo said the baby has been opening his eyes and nursing with his mom. The pair is expected to move onto exhibit in the next few days.
This is the second baby for Michael and Bess, the zoo said. They also have an 8-year-old daughter, Kasih.
Bornean orangutans are listed as "endangered," the zoo said. Scientists fear that wild orangutans could become extinct within the next decade if their forest habitat continues to be destroyed.
