PHOENIX, AZ - Students at Arizona State University's downtown Phoenix campus broke out their cameras and tuxedos to raise money for their newest fundraising effort- a 2013 "Men of Journalism" calendar.
Members and officers of the Society of Professional Journalists attending the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication recently started a Kickstarter program to help raise money for the organization.
Their Kickstarter website states that they are raising money to offset printing costs for their upcoming 2013 "Men of Journalism" calendar.
The calendar is said to feature 13 men aspiring to be journalists posing in a variety of different locations around the Valley in professional attire.
Corie Stark, the vice president of SPJ ASU, told ABC15 that the men in the calendar are all accomplished and passionate students, participating in The State Press, NewsWatch, The Blaze and other journalism programs.
Stark also said the men weren't chosen for looks or personality, but that they polled students on who they believed deserved to be in the calendar based on their work ethic and devotion to the career field.
Anne Stegen, president of ASU's SPJ student chapter told Downtown Devil that they wanted to do the calendar to highlight the male students and to get the attention of the mostly-female downtown campus.
They hope to have the calendar finished in time for ASU Finals Week as to be timely for the holidays and the new year. If SPJ receives funding in time, Downtown Devil states that calendars may even start selling around Thanksgiving.
The calendar is expected to sell for between $10 and $15.
Fundraising for the calendar through Kickstarter will end Nov. 13 and they are hoping to raise almost $600 in order to get the calendars printed.
