It's almost graduation time for Kayla Linarez. She's a senior at Arizona State University, graduating with a degree in communications.

She's quiet in class and kind of shy. Kayla certainly doesn't need that front and center seat. But what her classmates probably don't know is that one way Kayla likes to communicate is through music. When she's on stage, she is a completely different person.

"I wish I was that person 24/7 because that person on stage - she's fearless," said Kayla. "She doesn’t care what anybody thinks of her."

She's really is not shy when it comes to rapping. Kayla goes by K Mahree in the hip-hop world. She grew up singing but then decided to transition into rap. Her friends and parents raised an eyebrow.

"Because I never saw myself as being a rapper or to even achieve to being that type of person."

Today Kayla, or K Mahree, is making a name for herself in the Valley. She's writing her own music and trying to change how people think of female rappers.

"People think that, oh, rap is not really a good thing for a woman to do," said Kayla. "That shouldn't be a problem. You should do what you want to do."

If you would like to see K Mahree, her next event is at the hip-hop festival in Phoenix at Comerica Theatre on November 11th.
