PHOENIX - Airmen from the Arizona Air National Guard's 161st Air Refueling Wing Security Forces Squadron deployed Friday to Southwest Asia.
The 28 service members will be deployed for six months providing security for U.S. forces in the area.
In a ceremony at Sky Harbor International Airport on Friday afternoon, the soldiers said goodbye to their families and friends and left for Asia. The unit is based at Sky Harbor year-round.
The Air National Guard is made up of civilian-soldiers who can be mobilized as part of the U.S. Air Force for national missions.
Currently, more than 100 Arizona National Guard members are serving overseas on active duty, and they join the ranks of the more than 10,000 Arizona Guard members who have served the country since Sept. 11, 2001.
