PHOENIX - Two Arizona students competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee successfully spelled their words correctly, but did not make it into the finals.
Gilbert's Nila Dhinaker and Alessandro Luis Bolus, of Window Rock, Ariz., both flew to Washington D.C. and were among 279 other spellers, ranging in age from 8-15, at the national spelling bee.
Dhinaker correctly spelled the words "apothecary" and "mikado." Bolus had to spell "usurper" and "belligerent."
Despite spelling their words correctly, the scores from the competition are merged with the scores from their preliminary test, and then the spelling bee narrows the finalists to no more than 50 contestants.
The finale will air Thursday on ESPN3. Make sure to follow all the action on Twitter at @ScrippsBee .
