Why are school desks in an Ahwatukee dumpster?

There's hardly any room to go dumpster diving here after a dozen or so chairs faceted to wooden desks fill a dumpster. Another 40 -- maybe even 50 -- chair legs stick out in the sun, but not in hopes of a summer tan.

If you feel like something isn't adding up in front of Centennial Middle School, count ABC15 in too.

We asked the Kyrene School District why this furniture is seemingly being tossed away like the last homework assignment of the school year.

A spokesperson told us the school is transitioning to a more modern classroom setup. They're doing away with traditional desks and chairs, and adding more collaborative furniture to keep up with national demands.

You might be wondering: will these desks go to waste? Don't worry, they're getting a makeover, too.

Those tossed outside the school have been deemed broken or unsafe, so they'll be recycled. Desks in better condition will be donated to other schools in the district, or sold to the state.
