FD: Crews hampered fighting Ahwatukee house fire

AHWATUKEE, AZ - Investigators are working to determine what sparked a fire in an Ahwatukee home on Friday.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, crews from Phoenix, Tempe and Guadalupe departments responded to the first-alarm fire around 12:15 p.m. near 48th Street and Elliot Road.

The first crews found the fire contained to the attic area, but with an extremely high pitched roof and vaulted ceilings, the fire spread quickly, authorities said.

Due to the vaulted ceilings, firefighters changed their plan and tried to enter through the garage area.

Authorities say when crews removed the garage door they found the garage was filled to capacity with personal belongings and equipment, prohibiting access for firefighters.

The roof began to fail and firefighters were removed from inside the home to fight the fire from the outside.

The residents were not home at the time and now investigators are working to identify the cause of the fire.
