AHWATUKEE, AZ - Mountain Pointe High School's football team not only boasted a perfect 14-0 season last year; the Ahwatukee school also ranked seventh in the nation for the 2013 season. The recognition comes from MaxPreps, a California news website that extensively covers high school sports.
Mountain Pointe was one of 50 schools chosen by MaxPreps as part of its "Tour of Champions." The Pride averaged more than 48 points per game throughout the season and secured the state championship against Hamilton High School of Chandler in November 2013.
On the defensive side, Mountain Pointe restricted its opponents to single digits nine times and had four total shutouts.
"This is the first time that any Arizona team has been ranked in the top ten. We are honored for our players, our team and the school. The town is on fire about this award," said Mountain Pointe head football coach Norris Vaughan said in a press release.
The system MaxPreps uses to make its ranking includes win records, and also factors in margin of victory and quality wins against stronger opponents. MaxPreps' database ranked more than 16,000 high school football teams.
