Body of missing man found in E. Arizona

SHOW LOW, AZ - The body of a 28-year-old man who went missing April 1 near Show Low Bluffs in eastern Arizona was found in a remote area in the White Mountains earlier this week.

The body of Barton Sherwood was found Tuesday off Porter Mountain Road by a U.S. Forest Service Archeology survey crew, according to the White Mountain Independent.

At the time of his disappearance, Show Low police Sgt. Justin W. Hart said Sherwood suffered from mental illness and was known to sometimes hitchhike.

Sherwood's sister, Summer Allen, told ABC15 his death is being classified as a suicide. A pistol was found near Sherwood's body, according to the White Mountain Independent.

Services will be held Tuesday, May 31 at 10 a.m. in Pinetop at the LDS Chapel on Bucksprings Road. A memorial service will be held in Mesa on June 6 at 7 p.m. in the LDS Chapel at 925. N. Harris off of Gilbert Road. & Brown Road.

Donations are being accepted to help set up a musical scholarship fund in Sherwood's name. Donations may be made at any Chase bank under the names of Dan and Judy Sherwood or account #3026803431.

Allen said the family "is truly grateful for all the great people in Arizona. We received so many calls, emails, with offers to help hang up fliers. It meant a great deal to us."
