SEDONA, AZ - Anyone hoping to camp, fish, swim or hike in Oak Creek Canyon over the holiday weekend will be out of luck.
The threat of flooding has prompted the Coconino National Forest to close its land within the canyon. Recent wildfires have left the canyon prone to flooding.
All developed recreation sites, vehicle pullouts, swimming holes and hiking trails will be closed Thursday. Some spots were closed Tuesday as rain started to fall in the area.
State Route 89A and the businesses along the scenic highway will remain open.
Forest officials had planned the closure for Monday but said they would implement it earlier if the monsoon arrived.
