YARNELL, AZ - The Yarnell community gathered at two vacant lots Monday, remembering the firefighters who died, but also celebrating a new beginning for the town.
It was the groundbreaking ceremony for the first two uninsured homes being rebuilt after the fire. Steve Keehner owned one of them.
"Ash and pipes sticking out and total destruction," he remembered.
Because it was such an old house, Steve said it wasn't insurable. He lost everything.
"There were 40 years of memories here," he said.
Memories he can't get back, but because of his neighbors, Steve will have a place to create new ones.
The Yarnell Recovery Group is behind building 11 uninsured homes from the ground up.
The project is funded completely by donations
