PRESCOTT, AZ - Prescott police made a startling discovery when they went to check on two young children Sunday night. They found the kids' father deceased inside their home.
Police spokesman Brandon Bonney said officers got a call around 6:50 p.m. from a resident at an apartment complex near Lakeshore Drive and Robert Road that two young kids were throwing water bottles, cans, knives, and other items from their second story balcony.
The resident told police they thought the kids' father was probably asleep inside the home.
When officers arrived, they tried to get the children to open the door, but couldn't do so. Officers were able to get inside through a window, and once inside, they found the kids' 31-year-old father deceased.
Bonney said the children, a three-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, are believed to have fed themselves fruit snacks to survive.
Police do not believe anyone in the neighborhood knocked on the door to get the children help or check on the welfare of their father.
Authorities say the cause and manner of the father's death is still under investigation. It is suspected that drugs may have contributed his death.
Bonney encourages anyone who witnessed something suspicious to call the Prescott Police Department at 928-772-5140.
He says it's possible the children were in the apartment with their deceased father for most of the day.
He is not being identified at this time.
