Remembering Yarnell: Women still waiting to rebuild home year after deadly Yarnell Hill wildfire

YARNELL, AZ - The past year has been a struggle for one woman who wasn't home when the Yarnell Hill fire ripped through the community.

Carol Ryan came back to discover that she no longer had a home.

"I had my neighborhood here still with their trees even though I've lost everything," Ryan said.

She looks at the bits and pieces that survived the fire but seeing the gaping hole in her yard is devastating. The loss created a hole in her heart.

"I still don't have enough money to rebuild. Insurance has been a little slow in getting us what we need but it'll happen. It'll happen," Ryan said.

Ryan's optimism is inspiring but underneath it all lies sadness and pain from the knowledge that her home was the least of what was lost that day.

"[The Granite Mountain Hotshots] died about a half mile from here," she said. "It's very close and I can't even imagine such a thing."

Ryan says she will always remember the fire and hopes that in the coming year the community starts to heal.
