Prescott police chief Mike Kabbel retiring at end of year

PRESCOTT, AZ - Prescott's police chief says he'll retire at the end of the year for undisclosed medical reasons.

Chief Mike Kabbel says in a statement released Wednesday that he had planned to serve for several more years but his doctor advised him to make changes.

Kabbel is an Air Force veteran who joined the Prescott police in 1990 as a patrol officer after serving five years as an Arizona State University officer. The 50-year-old worked his way through the ranks and was named deputy chief in 2006 and chief in 2009.

The city says it will fill a vacant deputy chief position through an internal promotional posting and begin a search for a new chief next month.

Prescott has 77 sworn officers, 49 civilian employees and a budget approaching $10 million.
