PRESCOTT, AZ - Authorities say an 8-year-old boy is in stable condition at a Phoenix hospital after he was run over by his grandmother's vehicle in Prescott on Thursday.
Prescott police said in a press release that the boy had been swimming in his grandmother's pool and went to the sidewalk near the driveway to lie on the concrete to warm up.
The grandmother was leaving her home in her small two-door car and as she backed out of the driveway she struck the boy.
Police said he was caught between the hitch on the back of the car and the concrete.
The grandmother heard something and immediately pulled forward and found the injured boy.
The boy suffered a significant head injury, police said.
He was taken to a local hospital then air-lifted to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he was originally listed in serious condition.
On Friday police said the boy had had successful surgery to repair head and facial lacerations and a broken jaw. He is currently listed in stable condition.
Police said there is no indication of driver impairment and the incident is being investigated as an accident.
Police said the accident happened around 3 p.m. in the 700 block of Bird Street.
