PRESCOTT, AZ - Police arrested a man who was seen hitting a 4-year-old boy in the head with a trash can Wednesday in Prescott.
According to Prescott police Lt. Ken Morley, witnesses saw Dion Bennetts, 49, of Chandler yelling and cursing at the boy just before noon at an apartment complex near Gurley and Sheldon streets.
Police later found the boy in his grandmother's apartment, said Morley. He seemed upset but didn't appear to be injured.
Morley said the boy's grandmother told police the boy and her boyfriend, Bennetts, went out to take trash to the disposal area in the apartment complex.
She said nothing seemed wrong when the boy returned, but she didn't know where Bennetts was after taking out the trash, Morley said.
Officers also talked to two women who called police.
According to Morley, the women said Bennetts used very offensive, degrading language toward the boy and hit the boy on the head with the trash can, knocking him to the ground and causing him to cry.
When Bennetts noticed the women looking, he reportedly started yelling at them.
The women then called police because they were concerned for the boy's safety, Morley said.
An officer found Bennetts walking on the other side of the apartment complex and detained him.
Bennetts reportedly blamed the boy for not listening and for being disobedient.
Morley said Bennetts was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault and disorderly conduct per domestic violence.
He was also charged with two additional counts of disorderly conduct for his verbal attack toward the witnesses.
