Prescott merchants complain about arts fair

PRESCOTT, AZ - The city of Prescott is widely known for its arts and crafts scene, walkable downtown and laid back vibe that attracts tourists from all over the country.

The Daily Courier reports, however, that some local merchants complain that the town's regular vendor displays that converge on the Yavapai County Courthouse Plaza are "stealing the tourist season" from downtown business storefronts.

They say the weekend fairs are causing merchant sales to drop considerably, unfairly competing with permanent businesses.

City officials say the downtown arts and crafts fair is part of what makes Prescott unique, and that tax revenue from the sales helps the town.

Mayor Marlin Kuykendall says he plans to appoint a panel to look into the issue further and come up with some solutions.
