Granite Mountain Hotshot deaths shake Prescott medical community

PRESCOTT, AZ - The deaths of the Granite Mountain Hotshots have shaken the medical community in Prescott.

Several local doctors and nurses regularly volunteer to help firefighters during wildfires.

Doctor Hojat Askari was at Tuesday's memorial service to remember the fallen heroes. Askari was one of the first doctors to respond when he heard the 19 firefighters were trapped.

He says still has trouble dealing with the fact that the situation quickly went from a rescue to a recovery.

"It took us an hour to get there because the Sheriff's Department kept stopping us. By the time we got there, it was too late," Askari remembered. "It is really sad. We weren't able to do anything."

Asarki said he knew many of the fallen Hotshots and says the community will miss them.

The memorial service will re-air Saturday, July 13 at 10 a.m. on ABC15 digital channel 15.2, Cox Cable channel 95 and Century Link channel 16.
