PAYSON, AZ - Authorities are investigating an apparent accidental shooting in Payson that killed an 18-month-old boy.
Payson Police Chief Donald Engler says the toddler was playing with his 3-year-old brother around noon Tuesday when they found a gun inside a family friend's apartment.
Authorities say the unsecured handgun discharged and the toddler was shot in the head.
The child was taken to Payson Regional Medical Center and later pronounced dead.
Police say the single mom and her two boys were visiting a 78-year-man at an apartment in the same complex in which they reside.
The mother and friend heard a gunshot and went to a back bedroom in the apartment and saw the wounded toddler.
Engler says the 3-year-old was not injured.
Police say detectives served a search warrant at the apartment as part of their investigation. They are still investigating to determine if charges will be filed.
