Payson Police Chief: Boys took gun to other room before shooting

PAYSON, AZ - Payson's police chief says a 3-year-old boy shot his 18-month-old brother after the boys found a handgun in a neighbor's apartment and took it to another room.

Police Chief Don Engler says his department's investigation of the Tuesday fatal shooting will take about a week.

Engler says the investigation centers on the securing of the handgun, which Engler says was not in plain sight in the living area of the neighbor's apartment.

The boys and their mother were visiting the 78-year-old neighbor when the shooting occurred, and Engler says neither adult knew the boys had the semi-automatic handgun.

Payson police say no charges will be filed at this time.

Names of those involved weren't released.
