DPS: Semi truck rollover shuts down part of State Route 87

PAYSON, AZ - Authorities say the northbound lanes of State Route 87 have reopened after a semi truck rollover crash just south of Payson.

The roadway reopened around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday following the cleanup of yesterday's tanker truck crash north of Sunflower, according to a Arizona Department Transportation spokesman.

The wreck also forced the closure of southbound lanes in the area, but the roadway was reopened Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at milepost 228 about 30 miles south of Payson, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Oil that's used to make asphalt spilled into the northbound lanes, southbound lanes, and the area surrounding the crash, DPS said.

According to officials, the truck driver took a turn too fast and overturned, spilling 2,000 gallons of emulsified asphalt on the roadway.

Hazmat crews with DPS and the Arizona Department of Transportation worked to clean up the spill.

DPS said the driver involved in the crash suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center.
