PHOENIX - Yavapai County sheriff's deputies arrested a man Wednesday on Interstate 40 after searching his rental car due to suspicious behavior and reportedly finding several pounds of marijuana.
Deputies stopped a black Ford sedan on I-40 after he was seen following a semi-truck at an unsafe distance, officials said. The driver was identified as 42-year-old Benny Paul from Atlanta, Ga.
He said he and his female passenger had just left Los Angeles to head east and visit his ailing grandmother, but deputies reported he was acting nervously and giving conflicting information.
The deputy suspected Paul might be transporting an illegal substance, but Paul refused to allow the deputy to search his vehicle. A K9 unit was brought in for a sniff search, and the police dog alerted the deputy to the trunk area, where the deputy reportedly found six 1-pound bags of marijuana.
Paul reportedly admitted to possessing the marijuana, saying he picked it up in California and planned to transport it to Georgia.
Deputies arrested Paul on suspicion of multiple drug charges, and he was released on a $2,500 bond.
It was determined that his female passenger was not involved, police said.
