Suspect William Hewitt on the loose after Northern Arizona murder

MAYER, AZ - Yavapai County Sheriff's deputies are searching for a suspect after a woman's body was discovered in Northern Arizona Friday afternoon.

Dwight D'Evelyn of the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said detectives have identified 29-year-old William Hewitt, a resident of Mayer, as the suspect.

D'Evelyn said the woman's body was discovered around 1:30 p.m. in a remote area south of Mayer after authorities received a call around 10:30 this morning with information that Hewitt may have killed an adult female.

Hewitt was last seen around 10:45 a.m. traveling west on Main Street in Mayer driving a tan 1979 Ford pickup truck with a license plate number of AXG9504.

D'Evelyn said the truck's doors have faded Humboldt School District emblems and the truck has running boards.

Hewitt is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, 180 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair and a scruffy beard.

D'Evelyn said Hewitt may be armed and is considered dangerous.

Anyone with information on the location of Hewitt or his pickup truck is urged to immediately call 911 or the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office at 928-771-3260. To remain anonymous, call Yavapai Silent Witness at 1-800-932-3232.

A warrant has been issued for Hewitt's arrest.
