Slide Fire nearly 7,500 acres, little containment

OAK CREEK CANYON, AZ - A fire burning through Oak Creek Canyon has grown, but officials say they're making good progress.

The Slide Fire started Tuesday afternoon and jumped from 450 acres to 4,500 acres on Wednesday.

On Thursday night , officials said the fire is expected to grow between 7,500-8,000 acres by Friday. The official estimated the fire to be 5% contained, however an official number is expected to be released tomorrow.

Officials said if they pull of their game plan, and the fire doesn't push them, the fire could potentially be contained in 7-10 days.

Crews also said as far as evacuation orders are concerned, Kachina Village residents are not completely in the clear, but things are looking better.

Firefighters' main concern is keeping the fire from jumping the highway and reaching Arizona Public Service utility lines. They also hope to keep the fire south of Fry Canyon.

According to a post on the Incident Management Team Facebook page , cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity moderated fire behavior overnight.

No structures have been lost, and officials attributed that in part to home and resort owners creating defensible space around their properties.
