PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Authorities say a man has died after he was shot by his 4-year-old son Friday in an accident at a Prescott Valley home.
Sgt. Brandon Bonney said officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 3100 block of Truwood Drive around 12:30 p.m.
Bonney said 34-year-old Justin Stanfield Thomas was in extremely critical condition when he was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
He said it appears to be a "tragic accident."
Bonney said Thomas and the boy had gone up from the Valley to visit Thomas' old roommate when the boy found the gun and accidentally pulled the trigger.
"Within minutes the little boy found the gun, said 'Daddy, what's this?' Then, it went off," said neighbor Jeremy Hartt, who was also friends with Thomas.
It apparently was an unexpected visit and the former roommate had not had a chance to put the weapon away.
Hartt tells ABC15 Thomas served in the U.S. military and was a Green Beret.
Thomas used to live in the Prescott Valley home but moved to the Valley last fall when he learned his girlfriend was pregnant, Hartt said.
In addition to leaving behind the 4-year-old, he also leaves behind a 2-month-old baby.
Hartt said Thomas was a great father.
Bonney said the 4-year-old boy is in the custody of his mother and does not yet understand what happened.
