PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - We're learning more about the father accidentally shot and killed by his four-year-old son in northern Arizona on Friday.
From her home in Tampa, Florida, Marilyn Andreatta spoke with ABC News. She called her oldest son, 34-year-old Justin Thomas, her best friend.
A former Green Beret who served in Iraq, Thomas had taken his four-year-old son to visit a friend and fellow veteran in Prescott Valley.
Neighbor Jeremy Hartt tells ABC15 that friend, a former military police officer, keeps a gun for personal protection and was not expecting a visit from Thomas and his son.
"He was a curious little boy, you know. Turned around for one second and that's when the incident happened. It happened really fast."
Early Saturday, Thomas' mother told ABC News that her grandson did not yet understand what happened and he was waiting to play with his dad.
Thomas had recently moved back to Phoenix to be with his girlfriend who just gave birth a couple of months ago.
Police in Prescott Valley are still investigating, but call it a tragic accident and remind everyone to keep their guns secured and away from children.
