WHITTMANN, AZ - Authorities identified a man who was shot after attempting to run over a Maricopa County Sheriff's deputy Saturday morning.
Officer Christopher Hegstrom, spokesman for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, said a deputy attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation around 2 a.m. near 213th Avenue and Patton Road near Wittman, Ariz.
When the deputy asked the driver to step out of his vehicle, Ernest Mohamed allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and attempted to hit the deputy, according to Hegstrom.
The deputy then fired his weapon, striking Mohamed, according to MCSO.
Mohamed was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released and booked into 4th Avenue Jail.
