Authorities say a teen has suffered critical injuries after climbing a power pole in eastern Maricopa County on Sunday.

A sheriff's office spokesman said a teenager climbed a power pole near milepost 222 on State Route 88, near Tortilla Flat, around 5 p.m.

The climber touched high-powered power lines and was shocked, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.

A spokesman for the Rural/Metro fire department said the climber hit the power lines as he fell.

The teen suffered severe burns to his arms and a head injury. His injuries are considered life-threatening and he was receiving treatment from first responders on the scene, MCSO said.

Authorities said weather prevented a helicopter from launching to transport the climber to the hospital. They were also trying to get SRP to shut off the power in the area.

No further information was immediately available.
