PHOENIX - Authorities believe that the death of a hunter last week near Vernon was an accident, according to a press release.
Apache County Sheriff's deputies investigated a missing hunter Thursday, May 2, after his family reported he hadn't come home when they expected.
Deputies found the Chandler man at his hunting camp in the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest with a fatal gunshot wound to his chest. According to a press release, there was no indication of foul play or a disturbance of the camp.
"Deputies are still investigating to ensure that nothing has been overlooked, but all evidence at this time indicates an accidental death," said Sheriff Joseph Dedman.
The man had been hunting in the area with a friend, but his friend left on Monday to return to work. The man stayed in the area hunting by himself for several days.
The case is still under investigation.
