Crews build line around northern Arizona wildfire

HAPPY JACK, AZ - Coconino National Forest officials say firefighters have gained some control over a 1,200-acre wildfire in northern Arizona that is burning toward a highway.

Spokeswoman Heather Noel said Sunday that crews have established a line around the perimeter of the growing Jack Fire.

Noel says no structures are threatened.

A rock climbing area in Jack's Canyon was evacuated.

The fire, which started Saturday, is burning in grass and pinyon-juniper 13 miles northeast of Happy Jack in a canyon near State Route 87.

Firefighters are focused on making sure to keep the fire contained to west of Highway 87 and east of Long Lake.

The fire was originally listed at 800 acres but a fly-over led to a more accurate size estimate.

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
