The North Zone fire managers are preparing to start the prescribed fire season on Oct. 2 as, they say, a favorable window of opportunity has presented itself in the area south of Jacob Lake.

Fire managers will initiate ignitions in the Moquitch 4 area which is 6 miles south of Jacob Lake, bound by Forest Service Roads 217 on the east, 282 on the west, 260 on the north and 212 on the south.

Kaibab National Forest officials said the area is mainly ponderosa pine with patches of aspen and New Mexico locust. The prescribed fire is intended to reduce hazardous fuel loads, while regenerating aspen growth in the area and improving wildlife habitats.

Forest officials say smoke may be visible from Jacob Lake, Highway 67 and Highway 89A.

Visitors of the area are reminded to be careful when near fire personnel and fire vehicles during these operations by driving slowly, using headlights and avoiding stopping in areas where personnel are working.
