The Arizona Game and Fish Commission has called on the Bureau of Land Management to address the overpopulation of burros in the state.

The Havasu News reports that the commission passed a resolution Thursday recognizing that the Bureau of Land Management needs to address the burros.

The resolution comes days after a Mohave County supervisor proposed allowing burro hunting as a way to control the population. The supervisor says the proposal was aimed at shocking the BLM into action.

According to the resolution, there are more than 4,800 burros in Arizona, far exceeding the $1,676 burro limit established in the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burros Act of 1971.

BLM spokesman Jayson Barangan says the bureau needs to conduct an environmental analysis before taking any action.
