Solar panels will be installed on a parking garage roof at Northern Arizona University after a five-year process.

The Arizona Daily Sun reports $1 million in student fees is partially funding the project, which is expected to be finished by September.

NAU will pay Denver-based BriteStreet Energy Group for electricity generated by the panels. The school will own the system after 20 years.

University President Rita Cheng signed an agreement for the project last week.

The panels will be capable of annual production roughly equivalent to the amount of power used by 110 homes in a year.

The Green Fund student group is contributing $100,000 to the project every year for a decade and will help decide how energy savings will be spent after the university owns the system.
