Flagstaff man gets 21 years in fatal DUI crash

FLAGSTAFF, AZ - A 20-year-old Flagstaff man who was driving drunk when his SUV crossed into ongoing traffic and killed another driver will spend 21 years in prison.

A judge in Flagstaff handed down the sentence for Roberto Salamanca on Friday.

A jury had turned aside a prosecution effort for a second-degree murder charge but convicted him of manslaughter. Prosecutors asked for the maximum sentence and Judge Mark Moran obliged.

Salamanca's attorney had asked for leniency because his young client was remorseful and had no prior felony record.

Witnesses and crash reconstruction experts testified that Salamanca reached speeds of about 80 mph in the moments before he crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed into 20-year-old Kyle Wible's vehicle in August 2011. Phone records show he was also sending his girlfriend angry text messages.
