DPS: 1 killed in I-40 wrong-way crash

FLAGSTAFF, AZ - One person is dead after a wrong-way crash west of Flagstaff on Friday.

According to DPS, an SUV was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes at milepost 190 at 3:15 a.m. on Interstate 40.

The vehicle left interstate 40 at the A-1 Mountain Road on-ramp. The SUV stuck a guardrail along the road and rolled down an embankment and landed on four wheels, DPS said.

Officials said 39-year-old Eric Samuel was pronounced dead at the scene. Samuel is a resident of Black Canyon City.

Impairment could have played a role in this crash, DPS said.

No one else was injured in the crash. All lanes have reopened in the area.
