FLAGSTAFF, AZ - The Coconino County Detention Facility has switched to a remote video system for people visiting inmates.
The Skype-like system allows friends, family members and attorneys to converse with inmates from anywhere in the world as long as they have a Telmate account and the required hardware, software and Internet connection.
There are now six Telmate stations equipped with phone and video chatting capabilities in the jail lobby.
The Arizona Daily Sun says inmates have the same Telmate stations in their housing units.
Inmates or visitors can schedule visits, which occur in 30-minute blocks pretty much all day except during meal times and when the jail closes for the night.
Jail officials say eliminating in-person visits minimizes the chance of visitors sneaking contraband into the housing units.
